NEW CAT ENCLOSURE FOR FOSTER CATS.

It now seems a long while since my wife and I first took up cat fostering for Animal Samaritans, although it was only last year.

At first we fostered one or two cats indoors but after a while Chris Bishop asked if we would consider a purpose built cat enclosure in our garden. We agreed and so began weeks of work.

BUILDING THE ENCLOSURE

Firstly we had to research suppliers and do costing estimates. Then work commenced with the concrete base being laid.

Finally the day came when the pens arrived.  At 7.00AM the two chaps from PetPads arrived with all the pre-built panels stacked on a large trailer, the ultimate flat-pack.

Things soon started to take shape and by 9.30am the four living quarters had been assembled.  Luckily the weather held and by 4.30pm the work was completed.

We have four pens each 8ft x 4ft comprising a run and living quarters.

The living quarters are insulated for warmth and lined with plastic for ease of cleaning.

The pens are separated by an 8in gap and ‘sneeze panels’ are fitted to prevent any illnesses spreading between pens.

Across the front of the pens is a safety corridor to prevent any escapes.

After fitting some extra roofing to the runs and safety corridor the pens were ready for occupation.

UP AND RUNNING

It all seemed to happen very quickly, in no time at all the enclosure had the ‘No Vacancies’ sign up.

It is quite hard work but it is extremely rewarding and already we have seen the first cats move from the enclosure into new permanent homes.

We would like to thank Chris Bishop and the Trustees of Animal Samaritans who providing the funding to make this project possible. And also special thanks to Lisa, our Fostering Co-ordinator, who has provided a wealth of help and advice but even more importantly she has provided the cats.
