Sevenoaks Kent Dear Animal Samaritans It’s taken a long time to put pen to paper, but at last – Thank you so very much indeed for getting Tilly for us. We’ve had such a busy happy 5 months (since May) settling down and finding out all the pleasures of owning a dog! |

It’s been really enjoyable re-discovering all the footpaths and lovely places to walk in our locality, kind farmers with fields who let dog walkers run in them. It’s a whole new world of poopscoopers, dog parlours, country walks and friendly people who stop to admire your pet and chat. I’m loving every minute of it! Thank you so very much for all you do for the animals and us owners! Much love from Cathy & Nick Wagstaff, and Tilly PS. Re AS News – great newsletter – so enjoyed the Summer 2004 edition – the Bird Table bit – really excellent. |

Dear Chris In October 1988 having decided that I needed a cat in my life I contacted ‘AS’ from their ad in the News Shopper. I asked for a cat, ideally ginger and white only to be told that there was only one available, she was grey and white. I went over to Honour Oak Park where was in a foster home which she was sharing with the fosterers pet dog. On the top floor of the house she sat on the settee, she peered around of the settee, gave a look as if to so, "yes, what do you want?" followed by "oh well you'll do". I had been advised that she was about 8 months old although the vet established that she was closer to a year (so she was born around the time of the great storm). I was told by her fosterers that she had already had one litter and was pregnant for a second time and subsequently handed to a neighbour saying that "they never wanted to see her again". She had such a pretty face and the only name I could think of was Cleo - however as no name really seemed appropriate for such an individual looking cat she became HG (as my surname was Wells). ‘AS’ had advised me to introduce her to one room at a time when I got her home, as I let her out of the pet carrier she looked up the stairs, ran up and investigated all rooms, then she came downstairs and did the same - then she looked at me as if to say "ok, I'll stay, you can feed me now". In the early days she would try and follow me along the road whenever I left the house at fear of getting left behind, but she soon settled and become very much mistress of the house. I have many special memories of her as my great friend and companion, not least of all when David Attenborough was on TV impersonating birds of paradise - she started watching the TV, then jumped up onto the unit trying to get into the TV where she thought that real birds were (oh for a video camera!). HG and I spent fifteen and a half magical years together, until she had heart failure and died on 4 March. She was one of the greatest and totally irreparable. Now the time has come to move on and on 1 May, I adopted Henry and Tabatha, a pair of tabbies. They are a brother and sister aged 4 and 5, they have been well cared for by the elderly owner who died recently. They are so very different in nature and I am sure we will become good friends; they are settling in and still grieving for their late owner. They are waiting to go out in the garden - three weeks is a long time for any cat! Without ‘AS’, neither of these introductions would have been possible and my life certainly would not have been so rich. Perhaps I will let you have another story when they have settled in". Dear Animal Samaritans On 16th March Billy escaped into the wild blue yonder, unfortunately his wings weren’t clipped. That night it was bitterly cold and a sharp frost. My husband, two sons and myself missed him and didn’t know if he could survive having been used to central heating. There was a lot of tears shed I can tell you, but he was fit, strong and robust, so we didn’t give up hope, wherever he was we just hoped he was OK and had found a friendly human. Six weeks passed. He was found approx 65 miles away. A lady called Penny caught him, he was very hungry and thirsty. She notify Radio Kent so we picked him up on Saturday 3rd May. As Penny has many large Parrots and Dogs Billy has picked up a lot of new interesting sounds. He is back with his parents now thanks to Penny, chatting up the blackbirds, until we find him the perfect mate!

Hello, I'm Ted and I'd like to tell you about my life since my adoption from Animal Samaritans in January 2003. My new mum and dad came to collect me one Friday, I'd met them the week before and impressed them with my polite manners, holding up a paw to shake and giving my mum a big lick (I've always been a ladies man). I was sad to be leaving my foster home as I'd had a great time there and also I would be leaving my best friend Charlie who I'd grown up with, but he was moving on and I knew it was time for me to go too. My new parents had lost their beloved dog Holly last year and needed cheering up, there was no doubt I was the dog for the job! My parents are recently retired and so have bought a place in Norfolk, which they are busy decorating, and in the meantime they still have their house in London which is great for me as I have a town and a country residence! Being a more mature gentleman I like the quiet life, eating and drinking and strolling round my garden. When we are in Norfolk my dad takes me for big walks around the heath and there are some lakes which I like to have a splash about in chasing the ducks but I make sure I never catch them, I'm just having fun. After the first day or so I could hear mutterings about diets and hair cuts but hoped they weren't talking about me. My hair had grown pretty long in the last few months and although everyone said I looked like a big cuddly teddy bear I couldn't really see properly, also I had put on a few pounds so was getting out of puff running for a ball....I tried to convince them I was just big boned! I must admit though my new hair cut does make me look very smart and the low fat diet appears to be working...slowly! I have a lot more energy and really look forward to my walks. So thank you very much for giving me the opportunity to have another lovely home to live in. I like it here and I know they love me too as they don't stop telling me! Ted xx |
